Play cricket on one of the most beautiful villages in the South of England! Lurgashall is just a short 45 minute train journey from Waterloo and pick up can be arranged from Haslemere station. Places available for Saturday local league matches and Sunday friendlies. All abilities are welcome...
All you need is a good sense of humour and we will provide the rest; kit, teas, etc. Lurgashall really is one of THE most picture perfect villages in England and the cricket pitch is right slap bang in the middle of it. With its village shop, church and, most importantly, a great village pub, you are more than welcome to join us at one of the most quintesesential villages in the UK.
The Green at Lurgashall is one of the most picturesque settings for cricket in the south of England. Whether watching from the pub garden, or playing, there are few better places for cricket lovers to be.
It is not known when cricket was first played in Lurgashall, but there is a framed extract from the West Sussex Gazette of 1865 recording the outcome of a match against the “auld enemy” of Ebernoe – fixtures between these two villages are the cricketing equivalent of Rangers and Celtic clashes in this corner of West Sussex. It is likely that cricket started in the early part of the nineteenth century, so there is more than 150 years of tradition being played out each summer’s week-end.
The Club runs two teams. On Saturday, we play in the second division (of six) of the I’Anson league, itself the oldest cricket league in the country dating back to its formation in 1900. Membership of the league is confined to clubs within a twelve mile radius of Grayshott Parish Church, so travel to away matches is restricted, and means we play at other attractive grounds such as Tilford and Frensham. On Sundays we play friendly matches, some against local villages such as Tillington and Lodsworth, others against nomadic sides rejoicing in such names as Falling Leaves and Not the MCC.
On the first Sunday in July each year, we hold our annual six-a-side competition, which starts early in the day and lasts right through until the early evening. Always a great day.
GROUND HIRE:
The ground is available for hire should you wish to organise your own fixture. While week-ends are obviously in demand, it is possible to hire the ground during the week as well – in these straightened times, the club has had enquiries for people wanting to host an event as an alternative, and much less expensive, event for corporate hospitality. What better way to while away a Wednesday afternoon in mid-summer with colleagues playing cricket on the green, followed by supper in the Noah’s Ark……
